A Grand Day Out: 10 Fun Facts About Wallace & Gromit

A Grand Day Out: 10 Fun Facts About Wallace & Gromit

If you look at The Good Cheese Bone hard cheese bone packaging, you'll notice two very familiar figures on the front. This is the beloved Wallace and Gromit.

If you grew up with the sounds of clay-motion antics and the smell of Wensleydale, you know that Wallace and Gromit are more than just animated characters, they are British cultural icons. From their humble beginnings in Nick Park’s college sketchbooks to their status as global superstars, the duo from 62 West Wallaby Street has captured hearts for over three decades.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a newcomer to their clay-filled world, here are 10 cracking facts about Aardman Animations’ most famous pair.

1. Gromit Was Originally Going to Be a Cat

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than the long-suffering, intelligent beagle by Wallace’s side. However, Nick Park originally considered making Gromit a cat. He eventually decided that a dog would be a more practical companion for a man who loves building contraptions and frankly, a dog’s stoic personality fits the comedic timing of the films much better.

2. A Masterclass in Facial Expressions

Gromit is famously silent, but he is one of the most expressive characters in cinema history. Animators achieve this purely through the subtle movement of his brow and ears. It can take an animator an entire day to produce just a few seconds of finished, high-quality footage.

3. The "Wallace & Gromit" Licensing Empire

The reach of these two is staggering. Wallace & Gromit licensing has grown into a massive industry, spanning everything from video games and theme park rides to high end collectibles. And of course, our very hard cheese bones for dogs. Their universal appeal makes them a gold standard for brand partnerships that bridge the gap between childhood nostalgia and adult appreciation.

4. Wallace Isn’t Actually a Cheese Expert

Despite Wallace’s obsession with Wensleydale, he’s not a connoisseur at all, he just likes cheese! The popularity of the films actually helped save the real life Wensleydale Creamery in Yorkshire, which was facing closure until the characters’ love for the cheese caused a massive spike in sales.

5. They Are Oscar Winners (Multiple Times!)

The duo is no stranger to the Academy Awards. The Wrong Trousers (1993), A Close Shave (1995), and The Curse of the Were Rabbit (2005) all took home the Oscar for Best Animated Short or Best Animated Feature. It’s an impressive feat for a couple of guys made entirely of plasticine.

6. The Evolution of Merchandise: From Toys to Treats

You’ve likely seen the clever branding in your local pet store. Products like cheese bones with Wallace & Gromit on the front have become a staple for fans who want to include their own furry friends in the fun. Which is one of the reasons we chose them for our packaging.

7. The Search for the "Good Cheese Bone"

Among the various branded snacks, the Good Cheese Bone has become something of a cult classic for dog owners. Combining the brand's love for dairy themed humour with a high quality treat, it’s a shining example of how well targeted merchandising keeps the spirit of the series alive in the real world.

8. The "Wrong Trousers" Are Real

The "Techno-Trousers" featured in The Wrong Trousers were based on a genuine piece of robotic engineering. The team at Aardman had to invent a way to make the trousers move realistically, leading to some of the most complex stop motion sequences ever attempted at the time.

9. They Have Their Own Theme Park Attraction

If you visit Blackpool Pleasure Beach, you can hop aboard "Wallace & Gromit's Thrill-O-Matic." It takes riders through scenes from all the classic shorts, proving that even after decades, the duo remains one of the most popular attractions in the UK.

10. The Clay Never Stays the Same

In the early days, Wallace and Gromit were made of a specific brand of plasticine that had to be kept warm under studio lights to be pliable. However, the heat made the figures slightly melt, meaning the animators had to constantly "repair" them during filming. Today, they use more advanced synthetic materials, but the hand-made, fingerprint-textured charm remains!
