You'll see "grain-free" on our packaging and across our whole range, but what does it actually mean — and why does it matter for a dog treat? Here's a straightforward explainer.
What Does "Grain-Free" Actually Mean?
A grain-free product simply contains no wheat, corn, rice, oats, barley or other cereal grains. In many dog treats, grains are used as a cheap bulking ingredient or binder — something to add volume or texture without adding much nutritional value. Going grain-free means cutting that out entirely and relying on more meaningful ingredients instead.
For our cheese bones, training treats and pop steaks, that means there's simply no grain in the ingredient list at all — just 99.9% British milk with a dash of salt.
Why Some Owners Look for Grain-Free Treats
There are a few common reasons owners choose grain-free options for their dogs:
- Sensitivities or intolerances — some dogs can be sensitive to certain grains, and owners managing this often look to remove grain from every part of their dog's diet, treats included
- Wanting a simpler ingredient list — grain-free treats are often a marker of a more minimally processed product, with fewer fillers overall
- Matching a grain-free main diet — if a dog is already on a grain-free food, it's common for owners to want their treats to follow the same principle
It's worth noting that grain-free isn't automatically "better" for every dog — most dogs digest grains perfectly well, and grain-free isn't a requirement for good health. It's a preference some owners have, for their own reasons, and one we're happy to support.
Grain-Free Doesn't Have to Mean Compromise
Cutting grain out of a treat can sometimes mean compromising on texture or taste, especially if grain was being used as a bulking agent. That's not the case with our range. Because our cheese bones, training treats and pop steaks are made almost entirely from British milk, there was never any grain filler to remove in the first place — it's a naturally grain-free product by design, not a reformulated one.
